For the third year in succession Pete's Pond on Mashatu Game Reserve went live to regale the world with the excitement of Africa ..and all via satellite, courtesy of National Geographic Remote Imaging and Mashatu Game Reserve.

'Pondies' as regular viewers of Pete's Pond call themselves have become an African Wildlife Culture, tuning in daily to the continual stream of herds of Africa's animals approaching the pond to quench their thirsts. Forums on the National Geographic website allow Pondies to communicate amongst themselves and on which blogs scientists from Mashatu contribute on a regular basis. During the middle of 2007, a group of Pondies traveled from different parts of the world to visit Pete's Pond ahead of the commencement of the 2007 program.

For 2008, National Geographic Expeditions, in collaboration with a tour operator in the USA will be offering a safari to Africa which will incorporate 6 days at Mashatu Game Reserve Tent Camp.

The significance of this broadcast is that not only is it in colour, but it has night vision and all this enhanced by excellent sound quality.

Finally, the site also offers viewers an opportunity to learn about Mashatu, its research initiatives, the Trans-boundary Wildlife Park involving Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe including an animal gallery, video highlights and species checklists. For children and adults alike, this is a remarkable source of information and extremely educational. So while viewers can watch the animals approaching water to drink, hear the sounds of Africa in the backgr ound, they can also use the National Geographic website resources to learn about African wildlife in general and Mashatu in particular.
