23 - 29 March 2008

A hot day in the park with slightly overcast skies. At Nyaswe Borehole about 50 Elephants are making their way to parts unknown. Slowly strolling, their big grey bodies stand in hulking contrast to the (yellow landscape). Meantime a trio of lions settle in at Dead Croton. .... read more

17 - 22 March 2008

We set out with a cool morning breeze against our faces as we drove through the game reserve. Many animals were already out and about and not far from camp we came across a herd of wildebeests moving through the grass. At Crocodile pool the new pride of lions was found fast asleep.... read more

09 - 16 March 2008

When we drove near Nells Dam we saw three cheetahs. They were resting in the shade and we could watch them for quite a while. At Pole Hill we found a leopard female. She was feeding on an impala kill up in a tree. We drove through the dry riverbed and when we came up and drove towards Well shaped Mashatu, we saw 10 elephants there. They were quietly browsing and we could get quite close to watch them.... read more

02 - 08 March 2008

It’s been very hot in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve lately with thick clouds promising rain but not delivering any. We set out early on our drive to make the most of the coolest part of the morning. As we drove through the reserve we saw magnificently coloured birds and our ranger pointed them out naming them as we went along.... read more

24 February - 01 March 2008

It was a warm sunny day today. We had a wonderful high tea and left for the drive after that. As we drove out of Mashatu Main Camp we saw a large family group of baboon. They were feeding and resting and some females had little baby’s with them. We drove through the MJ / M1 crossing and found a leopard there. She was walking in the riverbed and we watched her for a few minutes before she disappeared into the bush..... read more

10 - 16 February 2008

On our morning drive we saw a big male leopard resting along a riverbed. As soon as we arrived he moved into tall grass and we lost sight of him. Driving through the beautiful landscape we also saw herds of impala, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe...... read more

03 - 09 February 2008

Today was yet another beautiful day with perfect morning temperatures. Our first “big” sighting was that of the new pride of lions to the north of Cheetahs Koppie. There were a total of six lions - four lionesses and two male lions. At first the lions were relaxed until a herd of about twenty elephants moved in and startled the lions which immediately hid behind the thickets..... read more

27 January - 02 February 2008

What an amazing morning for elephants! Over 200 elephants were seen walking down river from Baboons Bedroom towards the Majale River. Yet another large group of elephants was seen near Mc Kenzie Koppie walking towards the Croton thickets. Later in the morning we encountered the same large group seen near Baboons Bedroom all along the Majale River where some of the elephants were swimming, others drinking and some of the babies were fast asleep under the large bodies of their mothers..... read more

13 - 19 January 2008

This morning was filled with sightings of elephants. As we drove around the stunning landscape Mashatu has to offer, we came across a total of 150 elephants. In between the sightings of these gentle giants, we saw plenty of other game such as zebra, giraffe, warthog, kudu and plenty of impala. We did see something to do with a leopard though – for we came across a leopard tortoise! .... read more

Elephants, elephants and more elephants! All the way from Crocodile pool in the Majale River to the Wallow herds and herds of elephants were seen totalling over 300. Elephants were seen grazing, mud wallowing and sleeping under several of the Mashatu trees along the river .... read more

30 December 2007 - 05 January 2008

A cool overcast morning as we set out on a morning drive. It was a quiet morning out in the bush but there was lots of general game to be seen and this morning we also stopped to learn a little bit more about the amazingly colourful birds in Mashatu. Our ranger pointed out the Lilac breasted roller, the carmine bee-eater, Woodland kingfisher, Temericks courser, several of the stork species including the amazing coloured saddle billed stork. Near Eric’s Donga we had a glimpse of a young male leopard as he made his way up the White Cliffs, while the baboons in the area shouted out a warning to everything that would listen..... read more
