Since its inception in 2005, Pete's Pond on Mashatu Game Reserve has continued to regale the world with the excitement of Africa through live broadcasts…..and all via satellite, courtesy of National Geographic Remote Imaging and Mashatu Game Reserve

The significance of this broadcast is that not only is it in colour, but it has night vision and all this is enhanced by excellent sound quality. The site also offers viewers an opportunity to learn about Mashatu, its research initiatives, the trans-boundary Wildlife Park involving Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe and includes an animal gallery, video highlights and species checklists.
For children and adults alike, this is a remarkable source of information and extremely educational. So while viewers can watch the animals approaching water to drink, hear the sounds of Africa in the background, they can also use the National Geographic website resources to learn about African wildlife in general and Mashatu in particular.
'Pondies', as regular viewers of Pete's Pond call themselves have become an African Wildlife Culture, tuning in daily to the continual stream of the herds of Africa's animals approaching the pond to quench their thirst. Forums on the National Geographic website allow Pondies to communicate amongst themselves and on which blogs scientists from Mashatu contribute on a regular basis.
